The Mariner's Saviour
Lost, like Ulysses on his way home
Confused by an oppressive mist,
Irresolute whether to sail east or west,
Waiting for the winds are still,
A captain and his ship have to linger.
They stay and underneath wide jaws
Of the dreadful deep open to swallow:
Not to kill outright like Scylla,
Rather to crush and then release:
An utter wreck doomed to worse
Than just quick death.
Even if the vessel has enough strength
To withstand attacks from Neptun's realm,
Of what use are its tall masts
And white sails when the captain,
The living heart of the proud ship,
Is at loss and already despairing?
Who will light a lighthouse for them?
Who will guide them back to hope?
Or who will take pity and
Deliver them a bolt of lightning
For their deliverance?
