Of Bellerophon
The task to slay the Chimera –
Held to be the indubitable end
Of the bold venturer’s life,
Once proved less difficult
Than rendering the due praise
And offering to the Gods
For their vital part in the affair.
The glorious victor,
Aspiring for an Olympian chair
Then set the noble Pegusus
To fly to the snowy Mount:
Uninvited and thankless.
Short indeed was the ride,
Yet Bellerophon did not reach
The lofty halls of Zeus.
Grey rolling waves now
Chant him their solemn hymns.
Grieve for the hero by the fall dishonoured
Grieve for the human from his own will fallen
